Fencer’s Guidelines
Fencer Guidelines Children, Youth, Junior, u0026amp; Adult Fencer’s Guidelines | Print Version What do I expect from you? Your job is to work hard and do your best at all times, listen to your coaches, learn from those more skilled, help those less skilled, and to challenge yourselves: your skills, fears, and aspirations. My coaches and I can help you reach your goals, whatever they may be, but the motivation to achieve them must come from within each of you. Athleticism is a matter of will. Anyone can become an athlete—no one is born one. Athleticism is always an expression of will, for it is obtained primarily by hard work, done repetitively, over a long period of time. To become an athlete, you must first have the desire, but to maintain it, you must also have discipline. I cannot force anyone to work hard at the various programs at SFC, but I will always praise those who do, and encourage everyone to do their best. I will never belittle anyone who is not doing well, so long as they are trying. In the Manchester facility is a picture of a sprint being run by women who have lost at least…

For Competitions
Competition Guidelines Competition: Local, Regional, and National | Print Version The benefits of competition are many. You learn to fence in the club, in a low key, very supportive environment. Life is generally not like that. Competition gives you important tools for handling life. In addition to the opportunity to fence those trained by other coaches, competition will develop your ability to adjust to rapidly changing situations, to deal effectively (and without anger) to others trying to trick and defeat you, and show you how to ask for advice, tailor it to your own situation, and then use it. You will learn how to put wins and losses into perspective, and take pride in the quality of the effort as much as the status of the result. It will improve your ability to focus mental, emotional, and physical energy in moments of stress (there is always some level of stress in a competition, just as there is in life). The appropriate level of competition changes over time The first competitions are usually club team/novice tournaments meets, limited to Seacoast fencers only, between the Manchester and Dover branches (although I may invite members of other clubs to join us). My experienced…
Parent’s Guidelines
To the Parents of Youth and Junior Fencers | Print Version Welcome to Seacoast. We have had a tremendous past few seasons, one of our fencers, Abby Emerson finishing the Junior World Cup season ranked 10th in the world in U-20 Women’s Foil for the past season. And at the Junior World Championships last spring, she was the alternate in both the U-20 Women’s Foil and the Women’s Epee Teams! Previously she made the US team for the Cadet World Championships in 2003, finishing 22nd in U-17 Women’s Foil. In 2002, Seacoast fencers won two bronze medals at World Championships: the mother daughter team of Kerry Walton (3rd in U-20 Women’s Epee, and her mom, Yvonne Walton (2002, 3rd in 50+ Women’s Foil). This is the first time a parent and child have both earned medals at World Championships! Kerry made the US team for the World Championships in October, 2005. Seacoast fencers have now been on these teams nine times since 1999 (only the top three fencers in each weapon make the team each year). Two fencers have been offered full fencing scholarships, and three others have been offered partial fencing scholarships. And eleven Seacoast fencers have won 30…
